DESCRIPTION:Public holiday\nThe history of this day dates back to 1932\, when King Rama VII endorsed the nation’s first constitution\, beginning its journey to democratic government which lives up to its subsequent and present name\, “Thailand\,” meaning “land of the free.” \nUnder the new constitution\, the institution of the monarchy remained in place with the King as the head of state. On December 10th\, 1932\, Thailand formally transitioned from an absolute monarchy into a constitutional monarchy. Next year on November 15th\, 1933\, indirect elections were held in which voters elected subdistrict representatives\, who in turn elected members of parliament (MPs). Five years later\, the first direct elections for MPs were held in November 1937. In both elections\, MPs constituted half of all parliamentary representatives\, with the other half comprising royal appointees. \nUntil today\, Thailand’s Constitution Day continues to celebrate the country’s first constitution and this landmark transition\, and the enduring political tradition of constitutional monarchy.

DESCRIPTION:School holiday : Public holiday.\nKnown as Rama IX\, he reigned Thailand since June 9th 1946 until his death on October 13th 2016\, making him the longest-reigning monarch ever in Thailand’s history. \nDespite being a constitutional monarch\, and not legally being allowed a role in politics\, Bhumibol made several decisive interventions in the Thai political sphere and has been credited with helping facilitate Thailand’s transition to democracy in the 1990s. \nThe holiday itself is a colourful affair. Buildings across Thailand will display flags\, bunting and portraits of the late King\, while around the Grand Palace area of Bangkok\, the streets are decorated with thousands of marigolds. \nMarigolds are chosen for their colour\, as yellow is the predominant colour of the celebrations; as the King was born on a Monday and in Thailand\, yellow is the colour for Monday. \nIn the evening\, the streets around Ratchadamnoen and Sanam Luang are closed to traffic and many people come to watch celebratory fireworks displays. \nMost government offices are closed on this holiday and banks are closed except branches in shopping centres. There is no ban on the sale of alcohol on this holiday.
